My Partially Assembled Product Is Approaching A Delicate Step On The Assembly Line—How Do We Reduce Waste & Damage?

Written by Craig Newberry | Thursday, October 17, 2019

When developing the right assembly line conveyor system, reducing damage is a top priority. This is especially the case when moving partially-assembled products. Moving products in a semi-complete state can ruin them completely, leading to additional costs and delays. In that situation, the last thing you need is a conveyor system that causes products from banging into each other!

This underscores the power of alternative techniques when choosing the right conveyor solution. While traditional techniques are effective in many cases, they leave plenty of room for improvement for unique requirements. Glide-Line’s Zero Contact Zoned Conveyor could be the right solution to improve delicate product handling:

Zoned Conveyors are the Answer to Typical Conveyance Techniques

Typical accumulation conveyor designs are not the best when it comes to delicate assembly processes. A good example is when a product is curing, because rough handling can impact this process. Or, imagine your product in a partially-assembled state, what would happen if rough handling knocked a piece out of place? Placed but unfastened items waiting at a welding or riveting stations is just another situation where traditional accumulation is a risky proposition.

This product damage risk stems from the traditional single-drive / single-belt (or chain) method. When one product stops, products start to accumulate, banging into each other one by one. This is why the Zero Contact Zoned Conveyor works as an alternative. With Zero Contact Zoned Conveyors, we do not use a single belt. Instead, the conveyor is made up of separate zones, all with their own belt and motor. These separate zones carry products from zone to zone and station to station. With sufficient space between the zones, products do not touch each other. Zero product contacts equals zero product damage. This makes the Zero Contact Zoned Conveyor a great alternative to traditional assembly-line conveyors.
